ShamPHree method video!

I’m reading this book right now called Little House in the Ozarks, by ( you guessed it) Laura Ingalls Wilder. I was raised on her earlier books and consider her a personal hero of mine. I like her so much that I gave my second child her last name. I consider myself a pioneer woman and wife of a farmer stuck in the body of myself. And, by some random stroke of weirdness I find myself living in the Ozarks, which is where she settled.

This book is a collection of short stories, thoughts, and opinions of Laura’s from her mid-life. She was a contributing writer to many worldly publications and was a very smart and sophisticated farm wife with very strong views on what it meant to be a woman in the early years of last century during war times. Her words are concise and witty, and her viewpoints are practical and economical with a touch of humor and childish wonder. I like to think that if she were alive today, she would be an enthusiastic blogger like myself, HTHG.

Anyways, in a chapter about taking care to look your best Laura writes about using baking soda in the hair to cleanse it and make it soft and fluffy, and vinegar for shine. She used the ShamPHRee method!!

Reading this validated my own no-poo journey and made me so happy that I decided to make you a video!

For all of you that have asked me how exactly I use the ShamPHree method, here you go.

XOXO.

  1. I just want to start by saying you are AWESOME and I just love that you take the time to share such amazing hairstyles.

    BUT…

ACK!! Never brush your hair whilst wet, ever. It will cause breakage. If you feel the need to do so, please, use a wide tooth comb (smooth wooden is best). Better yet, gently work it in with your fingers.

Brushing while wet = hair nono

    • Lets talk about this hair rule. You are the second person who has been quite shocked that I would suggest brushing hair while wet. HTHG likes to break hair rules, because I think that many of them are out-dated and not true for everyone (like shampooing hair, hence the no-poo journey;)
I have been in the hair industry for ten years and counting and have never seen or heard a reported problem with hair breakage from brushing it while wet. However, this does not mean that it might not work for you. And if it doesn’t, please don’t do it! I am sharing my tips for what works for me personally. If you want to modify the routine to suit your own hair’s needs, by all means please do:) But major hair no-nos? I don’t generally buy ‘em. Thanks for the comment. And a general note: I am sharing my personal tips, I encourage you try them but please feel free to modify them to suit your own beliefs. XO

  2. I finally took the no-poo plunge and love it. I tried it about a month ago and found that my after putting the baking soda in, my hair felt really slimy. So I washed it out with shampoo. My wife convinced me that although it has that feeling at first, it really works better than shampoo. So I tried it again today. This never happens, but she was actually right! My hair, short as it is, came out clean and shiny. I’m hooked. Now I don’t have to pay for expensive shampoos that are harmful to the environment and that support multi-national corporations. And its better for my health. Thanks How To Hair Girl!

      • I am just starting to try the ShamPhree method! I just read the above post that said his hair felt slimy. Is that the norm?? I wish mine felt slimy! Mine just feels dry and dirty all at the same time :( Not sure what to do… I like the slimy feel that you get when you use soft water. My hair is so soft & fluffy when I use soft water.

        • Give it some time, be patient. Try using less BS in your mixture and more ACV. Be sure to brush your hair regularly to help distribute the oils. Hang in there!

  3. Ah, so amazing to read your Laura Ingalls Wilder reference. I also grew up on the entire series! I’m pretty sure I inherited my DIY spirit from LIW. I’m about to go take a shower to give my first go at nopooing and also try a baking soda scrub. Thanks lady!

      • 3 weeks into no-poo and the hair is softer and seems to be growing faster than usual. My scalp is also noticeably healthier. I just ordered a custom consult from you– I want to achieve no-maintenance haircut and color next. Love your website! Thank you!

  4. Just found this site thanks to Bust magazine. Thank you – I am going to try this! Your whole website is a lot of fun – I appreciate your generosity in sharing, and was happy to hear you live in the beautiful Ozarks, as do I. :-)

    • Glad you found me. No-poo ( I like to call it ShamPHree now because I don’t like using the word poo to talk about my hair;) has worked beautifully for me and many others. Definitely try it, and stick it out for a while because sometimes it takes a couple weeks for your hair to adjust to the change. xo

  5. Hey Rox,
I’ve been meaning to explore your site for so long and feel guilty it’s taken me this long to look at it for more than 10 minutes here and there. I do, however, send everyone I know to check it out! Finally I have made a little time to really get into it and I’m so glad I have! For one thing it’s lovely to see your beautiful face. I’m super excited about this shamPHree method!! I already only wash my hair on Saturdays, but I think this will be even better! I’m starting tonight :) I hope to see you soon!
    Much much love!
    Kelsey

  6. Hi Roxie,

I found your site through Jen’s (from Naked Eye Beauty) link to your hair powder video on her Facebook page. I’ve been reading through for the past few days, and I love it! You have so much great information. My hair is wavy/curly, sometimes frizzy, and I read Curly Girl years ago so I’m familiar with the method. I had tried it years ago and given it up. Long story short, I recently moved to a new city, and my hair was NOT happy. It was drier, frizzier, yet oilier and itchier on my scalp. I tried your ShamPhree method a couple of days ago, and although my scalp is still a bit too oily for my liking, it finally feels good (calm and not itchy/irritated) for the first time in months! Needless to say, I’m thrilled, and hopeful that the oiliness will disappear with time. Thank you for this awesome site!!

    • You are most welcome! I predict that your scalp will calm down quickly. Make sure and work a good brushing into your weekly hair routine, too. This helps stimulate the scalp into balance.

  7. Hey, I just found your site from Offbeat Empire. I had a question for you: I have super curly (permed) hair that I never ever ever brush. Do you have an alternative? Or do you think brushing it wouldn’t affect my curls to bad?
Also, I love your site. :)

    • I think that using a paddle brush would be fine with your perm. I think the key with perms and brushing is that you don’t want to use tension on it when it is wet. ( no boar bristle brushes on wet hair)

  8. Hey, quick question.. do you feel the baking soda removes product? Like gel, hairsprays or mousse? I perm my hair and use product to define the curl but am very curious about the no-poo methods.

  9. Found you through Offbeat Home & am excited to start trying this method as I’ve had hair battles for years and recently have become acutely aware of just exactly what ingredients are in the products we put in and on our bodies. This is a great way to have total control over part of my beauty routine! I wonder how often you Shamphree? Is it daily? Thanks!!

  10. I used to shampoo and condition my hair everyday…if I missed just one day it would get so greasy and my scalp would get so itchy. This method is a blessing! I do have some questions though…I have curly hair and I don’t brush it…I used to use a wide pic comb in the shower after I put conditioner in, but that was it. Since I have been using the brush with the no poo method, my hair has been so frizzy…and I’m worried about damage because its near impossible to get the brush through my hair after spraying on the baking soda. Is using the brush an essential part? Could I just dunk my hair and scalp in the baking soda mixture? Are there any other tips? Thank you!

    • I think you can get away with not brushing if you make sure to massage your scalp with your fingers when your hair is dry, before rinsing your hair with water in the shower:)

      • Thank you for that! Another question…my hair *feels* dry and like straw, but then again I have always used conditioner everyday. So I guess I’m wondering if this is a normal sensation because I’m not used to the feel of untreated hair, or do I need an additional moisturizing thing?

  11. Hi, this is the first time I’ve ever checked your page. Could you explain me this whole no-shampoo thing? I wash my hair everyday with shampoo and conditioner, sometimes I try to wash it alternating days but by the morning of the day I’m supposed to wash it my roots and bangs are really dirty and oily. That’s really noticeable because my hair is dark brown and now I got the ombre look done. I have oily hair. Any advice? I really want my hair to look good everyday. Thanks!

    • I call it Shamphree, and It is basically using baking soda and water mixture as your shampoo, and apple cider vinegar and water mixture as conditioner. It balances and evens out the hair and slows down oil prodution so that you dont need to wash frequently, and your hair looks basically great all the time. Low maintenance and easy on the pocket book, my hair has never looked better.
Read through HTHG’s shamphree category for all you need to know on the how to’s and why’s of going shamphree. Free your hair!

  12. Started the shamphree journey today, and I’m amazed. My hair feels and looks great. I can’t wait to see the changes a couple of weeks from now. I might even start my kids on it as well.
