Power Hair with ColorPrint Clip-ins

IMG_4361Hi babes!

I hope everyone’s Spring has been colorful and bright:) As many of you know, I have spent a lot of time painting swatches of hair with a technique I call ColorPrint, practicing up to teach future workshops on creating inspired color designs in the hair.IMG_4367

This practice has left me with a case full of beautiful clip-in hair extensions, each one with original hand painted art work on them. I decided, after much coaxing from friends and fellow artists and stylists, that I should sell these clip-ins in the Free Your Hair Shop to those of you who would love to have a beautiful sweep of color in your hair that you can put in yourself, and take out whenever you want. IMG_4388

These clip-ins are great for special occasions ( Perfect for festival hair😉 or daily wear. They require no real upkeep or special care, just keep them de-tangled, no washing needed. They were each made by me, in a state of creative bliss, and with massive intention for helping summon inner creativity so wear them thoughtfully:)IMG_4387

They can be cut to match your length, either by you or by your stylists or hairdresser friend. They can be curled to match any hair texture.

Here is how to clip them in……..

Begin by making a parting that runs parallel to your natural part, but falls about an inch and a half below your natural parting.

IMG_5131Use the little clips on the back of your extension to clip the hair just below the parting, snuggly to the head. (If your hair is very fine, do some light back-combing at your roots below your parting to give the clips something to grab onto.)IMG_5134

Now flip your hair over the extension, at your natural part. The top of the extension weft should be hidden under your hair, with the beautiful colors of the piece popping through in the ends of your hair.

Martha Pierson in Fayetteville, AR says  “I have and love this brush!…I have very curly hair and my hair loves the feeling of this brush, I do have to be cautious of the ends but once I have made it through them I am good to go for marathon brushing!”

Anna Diego, @radradmama posted from Hawaii via Instagram “In the truck, baby boy is asleep, parked in my drive- time for a hair brushing session with my new, actually good for your hair hairbrush by @howtohairgirl. Driving the Vision, Hair Musings.

IMG_4502Hi Dear friends. Reporting live from a cloud of Cherry Blossoms in the Pacific Northwest…… I want to begin by sending big gratitude to you all for sticking with me here at HTHG. I want you all to know that my vision for this space is a strong as ever, and I am really trying to focus energy towards involving my community of readers more into the content of the blog.

That said, I encourage all and any of you who have inspired hair stories, photos, ideas, theories, remedies, anything……..Please consider sharing them with us. You can email me pitches for stories and posts at howtohairgirl@gmail.com. The goal here is to create space where people feel comfortable sharing and excited and inspired by other’s stories.

Since I quit my day job, I have indulged myself in creating distance between myself and an urge to be practical or trend-following when it comes to hair. If you haven’t noticed, I have been pinning crystals into hair and hand painting designs in people’s hair, all in an effort to break loose into new realms and encourage others to think outside the box creatively. It is time for a renaissance of hair and styling and creativity, and we want to help lead it through the hair industry, beauty industry, and into the mainstream. There is so much that has already been done, but there is even more that hasn’t:)

Today, I am sharing some of the things that help me feel inspired to keep creating interesting hairstyles. IMG_3668

The Grape Hyacinth that pop up overnight, and blanket every green patch of grass all over the city of Seattle with their sweet blue loveliness. I used some to perk up a braided collar on Birch.IMG_3667

Then, I combined them with a few large crystals (because crystals make great hair rollers;) and a big succulent hen plant. IMG_4569

I found an insanely cool hat in my mom’s closet. She thinks it came from either Guatemala or Chiapas……It is woven straw with a wildly vibrant tail of dyed ribbons. She let me have it. When I put it on my head, I felt like the pony I always knew I was. Several  of the ribbons were quite tattered and ready to break soooooooo………

I pulled them off and braided them into Birch’s Fishtail braids, and wrapped them around her head. Festival hair inspiration anyone?IMG_4524IMG_4762

I felt very restless around the New Moon, which was on April 7th. Naturally, a perfect time to make a few floral mandalas using all the beautiful petals and flowers around right now. I am thinking about starting to teach a floral mandala workshop because I believe so strongly in the power of the mandala making process in sparking creativity and connecting us with the earth. It is my medicine and I want to share it. Anyone interested?IMG_4740IMG_4536

Nexties, I have been feeling super neglectful of my short haired and curly haired babes. This is only for lack convenience and models who want to let me play with their hair. I am putting it out there into the world…….Who wants to be America’s next top curly haired and/or short haired HTHG model? Until then, Here is some inspiration from last years post on the Fro-Hawk and the Floral Garland Craft DIY and hairstyle.

Lot’s of love and great hair vibes your way. Oh, and also, have you gotten your Free Your Hair Brush yet?

xoxo, HTHG

The Free Your Hair Brush!

Hi babes. This exciting launch is a long, long time coming!!!

IMG_2067Since I started blogging, and stripping down my hair routine and learning to care for my own hair and self better, and sharing the experience here, the one consistent tool that I have never strayed from has been a good hair brush.

Several years ago, I wrote this post about brushing your hair and my love affair with my Mason Pearson brush, which will never end. I believe that every hair type can benefit from the use of a great brush…..And I also believe that 150$ is a lot to spend on a hairbrush for most of us. Sorry, Mason Pearson.

IMG_1775Then, last year I shared a post with Refinery29 on the importance of brushing our hair, and why it is at the root of holistic hair health. Why shampoo when you can cleanse and balance your hair mechanically by brushing it, without stripping it? I am talking healthy scalp, rapid hair growth, shiny, happy strands from root to tip. All those things that our hair product container labels promise us, can be achieved by brushing.

IMG_3787A good daily or weekly hair brush session can be a sacred and wonderful part of our self-care routines. I do mine before I shower, because brushing my curls results in clown hair. So, I spend 5 minutes brush, brush, brushing from all angles, working the natural oils from my scalp through to my ends, and spreading that beautifully oil protection and detangling action through my entire head of hair. It feels magnificent. When I am done, I have very poofy hair, so I jump in the shower and give it a good rinse, reset the curls.

Brushing is an essential part of shampoo-free life, because we need that mechanical scrub to work the oils through and keep our hair in balance. I can’t say enough about it. I brush my daughters hair, I brush my husbands beard, we use our brushes constantly.

A good hair brush is a tool for life, which is why we are thrilled to be launching a beautiful, beech wood handled mixed bristle hair brush that feels as good in your hands as it does in your hair.

brushLadies and gentlemen, I present the Free Your Hair Brush, now available in the shop. This brush is smooth, effective, just burly enough for all hair types, and is consciously designed and created with all the sweet details……complete with a beautifully engraved emblem, and pre-oiled to perfection. Care instructions provided.

Get yours today, and share this post around with your friends. Y’all deserve a good brush, and your hair will thank you forever for it. *Bonus* Our first 15 orders will receive a free Crown Chakra hair anointment oil with your brush!!!!!
