She liked the sail away braid. She went to work with a scarf in her braid. I love seeing her in her NYC apartment in her jammies.
I can’t wait to rock cool hairdo’s with Alix Brown at OCF this year. Magic will happen. #bethefair

This triumphant tale of DIY dip dye is told by Leah, brave naturally curly red-head (lucky!!!!!!) who watched this video to learn the technique that brought vibrant color to her ends! Can I just say that I love her expression in these photos? I want to be her friend.
Here is what Leah says….
“‘Ello everyone out there in DIYer World!
So, I have SUPER thick, SUPER curly, SUPER red hair and my favorite color is purple. I have been trying to dye my hair purple with non permanent options for years and nothing has worked out the way it should have, my base color is just too dark and vibrant on its own. I finally broke down and decided to try a permanent dye option after seeing the Dip Dye style through a link on Pinterest. I bleached the last 3-4 inches of my hair as light as it would go, a nifty yellow/gold/orange color that I will someday utilize all on its own for a style. Then I used Splat’s Lusty Lavender to cover all of the bleached areas, plus a tiny bit of overlap onto my natural red. Then I massaged Garnier Nutrisse Reflective Blue Black into the very ends, only 1-2 inches worth and let it all sit for about 20-30min. Then rinse and dry! The pink/purple/blue/black fade turned out way better than I expected and I didn’t expect to get the pink at the top, but I love it!”
Hey! I wanted to show you a photo of how my hair is looking these days. There you go! That’s with no (professional) hair cut in 5 months. I have trimmed my bangs and the back twice now with your help. That’s so awesome for me! I absolutely love how the asymmetry keeps it looking soft and feminine. Who knew a badass hair cut like the “dragon tattoo cut” could grow out to be so perfectly girly? This is the first time I’ve grown it out in about three years. I always thought I couldn’t have long hair because it was too dry and unmanageable but now that I am ShamPHree-ing and not using heat tools or hair products I’m realizing my hair actually kinda rules ;] I was just holding it back (and frankly torturing it) before.
I’ve been debating finding a new stylist because the back of my hair is being awkward and I want to try funky bangs but I’m starting to think that I need to just trust my hair (the back especially) to grow out and be itself and be beautiful and maybe soon I’ll trust myself enough to try some crazy new DIY bangs. Thanks again for the help and confidence!
Erika, we think you look smashing!
Here is some recent testimonial from people who have gone DIY on their hair with HTHG cut and color video tutorials……
I have been overwhelmed with great feedback from people who are taking their hair and their families hair into their own hands. I am SO HAPPY to be able to share with people and help them empower themselves. Thank you all:)
” I love my hair after cutting it myself with HTHG’s choppy bangs video. I had a haircut that wasn’t working on me, come to find out all I needed was the right bangs and now I love it. Her video was funny, easy to follow, and I appreciated the DIY filming and production. She is a woman who has some great tricks to share and knows how o make it easy for a first time DIYer”-Tanya G, Pittsburg
“My DIY perfect layers and Ombre color looks perfect, and it didn’t cost me much at all. Now I know how to DIY it, I’m eager to try more HTHG videos.”-Genny T, Scottsdale

“I was so scared to take my son in for his first haircut, but his black curls were getting out of control. I found HTHG online and did the hairstyle for a wizard haircut on him and it turned out great. He looks precious, and he still has his curls. And it was my first time ever cutting hair!”-Jamie Williams, Texas
“Zooey bangs are my JAM! I do them on myself, and several friends too. What an easy trick!”-Emily C, Chicago

“I have foiled my own hair 3 times now with HTHG’s face framing foil video and it is so easy! It looks great every time, and I love that she took the time to link in the ins-and-outs of foiling for me before I bought the video. I felt very prepared to take the plunge, and it turned out great!”-Libby A, NYC
” I was ‘stuck in hair, stuck in life’ until I got my HTHG custom consultation. It got me on the right track with a routine that worked with my hair type, and a focused hair goal to work towards. When my hair got long enough, I had my girlfriend give me the ‘hipster pixie chick‘ haircut and I am currently LOVING my hair.” -Dee P. Pittsburg
” I have used HTHG’s ‘cut your husbands hair‘ video for several months now on my dude, as well as the ‘Hipster Pixie chic‘ on my sister. They both loved their haircuts! I have had so much fun trying out these tips and tricks and sharing them with friends” -Shannon D. Brooklyn, NY
” I do the ‘Perfect layers and ombre color‘ video on myself and at least half of my friends! We get together and drink wine and play with each other’s hair. Thanks so much for the inspiration! I love that I can afford to have great hair.” Phaedra C, Portland, OR
This is more a “I’m so glad to see I’m not the only one” story.
I’ve been struggling to find a good routine for my hair – now down to my hips – for about two years now. I’ve been growing it out for about three years and recognized that when I had long hair before, I didn’t take great care of it, and I always had it up. I decided that I would be growing it out to actually wear it down and enjoy, but to do that I needed to make sure it was as healthy as possible.
I tried the SLS free method – I used shampoo bars and vingar rinses – and while it cleaned my hair nicely and left it soft the first day, I would experience an incredible amount of static the following days and I would losing a TON of hair every time I shampooed, so I quit that after trying it for almost 6 months. Plus that, it was extremely pricey!
So I tried another method; one that I had used before, I went to Giovanni hair care products which, again, were more expensive and the amount of conditioner I needed to use for my hair, which is probably comparable in thickness to that of a lion’s mane, was really killing my pocket book. So I nixed that.
THEN I tried another tried and true method, I used Suave Naturals and did a heavy coconut oiling before I shampooed (which has been twice a week for as long as I can remember, with a nightly conditioning in the shower for my length.) This was working great, except I noticed that I was experiencing more and more tangling and I was just going through WAY too much oil – again, it was getting expensive.
Frustrated as heck, I decided to give one other method a go – a derivative of the no-poo method. I knew I couldn’t do Water only, because my hard is too hard and I absolutely wasn’t willing to go through the process of getting my hair’s oils to adapt because I tried it in the past and it just never actually calmed down and I had greasy and staticky hair at the same time. Nasty.
So, I bought – based off of many other people’s recommendations – the V05 line. I massage a large handful of conditioner into my scalp and run another, smaller, handful through my length and keep massaging until I hear that “squeaky clean” noise.
Oh, my GOODNESS!! My hair has never felt so lovely! It is soft, and clean, and it doesn’t tangle and you know that downy feeling you love from a kids’ head of hair? Totally have that. And V05 costs .75 a bottle, so even though I am going through a bottle a week, the cost is nothing compared to what I used to spend.
I did shampoo – without oiling – a month into my experience to get rid of buildup, and so far this seems to be working extremely well. Plus that, the additional massaging has really helped the healthy of my head.
In the before and after you can see the fluffiness of my hair before vs. the softer look that I have achieved now.
So I really just wanted to share my success with this and that it’s just so cool to see someone else is having such a great time with it. Thanks for documenting your success!
