Are you ready to embark on an adventure in learning and loving your natural hair? Have you checked off your ShamPHree supply list? Have you watched my ShamPHree method video to get a feel for how I do it?

Here is a little rundown of how you will start your journey. Keep in mind that all hair is different and there are MANY ways to experiment to help you find the routine that is PERFECT for you.

Start your first ShamPHree by mixing your BS and ACV formulas.

*Things to consider-

If your hair is very dry, porous, or colortreated.…..

- Cut your BS measurement in half and double your ACV. Why? because you need a lighter cleansing (dilluted BS) and a stronger cuticle sealer. (Double ACV.) -Also for these hair types, you will want to wet hair FIRST before applying your BS

- Do a dry coconut oil treatment before you ShamPHree. Apply the oil to your dry ends and brush it through with a boar bristle brush. Let it sit overnight, and ShamPHree it out in the morning. Sometimes it will feel greasy for a couple hours after drying. Be patient. Your hair will thank you.

- Skip the BS every other time you ShamPHree, and just ACV it.

If your hair is thick, coarse, unruly, curly…..

- Make sure you brush your dry hair vigorously with a boar bristle brush thoroughly at least once a week to help distribute the oil that gets trapped at your scalp. I recommend doing this prior to every ShamPHree. Your ends need this oil.

- Do an extra ACV rinse in between full ShamPHrees to make your hair shinier and more manageable.

- Rinse out ACV with cold water if you can stand it. This will help smooth the cuticle of the hair.

- Do regular coconut oil treatments.

- If your hair seems dry all the time, consider dropping the BS all together and just using ACV with a weekly coconut oil treatment.

- Use liquid gold curl polisher for extra moisture.

If you hair is very fine, oily and limp……

- Brush your hair daily.

- Double your BS and leave it on your dry hair for a couple minutes before rinsing.

- In between ShamPHrees, sprinkle a little cornstarch or rice powder into your dry roots and brush it through to help soak up extra oil and give your hair a little lift and body.

- Use water as warm as you can stand when you ShamPHree.

If your scalp is very dry or irritated….

- Add a couple drops of lavender or tea tree essential oil to your ACV to help calm irritation.

- Make sure to brush your hair regularly to stimulate and exfoliate your scalp.

- Do extra ACV rinses with essential oil in between full ShamPHrees

- Once a month, massage coconut oil into your scalp in the shower and brush it in with a paddle brush. Wrap your head in a towel or t-shirt and sleep on it. ShamPHree it out in the morning, doing 2 rounds of BS and 2 rounds of ACV to remove the oil from the hair.

If your hair is oily at the roots and dry at the ends…..

- Brush it every day. Make sure to rinse your brush well in between uses.

- Coconut oil treat your ends weekly.

-This is a common occurrence for newly converted Shamphree-ers. Be patient, and stick with it. Your hair will balance out.

- Do extra ACV rinses in between full ShamPhrees.

After your first 2 weeks of ShamPHree-ing notice what you like and don’t like about what is happening. Is your hair too oily seeming? too dry? smelling too much like ACV? is your hair and scalp happier than they have ever been?

Make necessary adjustments and experiment until you find the perfect routine. Remember…..BS is like your shampoo. It is a base element. It is your cleanser. ACV is your conditioner and your acid element. It seals the hair back up.Together, they balance. But different hair types will require more of one and less of the other. There are no rules with ShamPHree.

The point of SHamPHree is to keep your hair and scalp in balance. The point is not to clean and strip your hair. The need for styling products should be eliminated with a healthy scalp. I encourage you not to load up with products when you use this method……But, it is allowed;) I won’t tell anyone.

Good luck on your journey, and please email me any questions on the topic at howtohairgirl@gmail.com

xoxo!

I apologize. I have neglected the dudes in the room. I know you are there, and I want to include you in this discussion. So, for you……..I present a tutorial of a basic manscaping for the face.

Manscaping is the basic grooming and removal of male hair. Do you think this man needs scaping? I’m kind of loving his fur (from afar)

My brother in law Jose Barajas ( Not this hairy guy, but the guy featured in the tutorial;) was awesome enough to let me manscape him. He was lightly hairy with bushy burns, shaggy hair and wildish beard and stash. He needed a simple and basic shaping up of his facial hair. I started off by giving him the dapper dude haircut. Here is how I scape.

1. Start with the side burns. Comb them all backwards towards the ear. Cut straight down the jawline.

2. Comb them a forward towards the face. Cut a straight line down the cheek.

3. Cut straight across the bottom of the jaw line, against the skin.

4. Now use your comb to hold the hair out from along the jawline. Cut shear over comb to remove length from that line.

5. Repeat on the other side.

6. Now have man lift his chin to scape the under-neck. Use your comb to pull the hairs out and to one side. Shear over comb cut to remove that hair.

7. Repeat on the other side of the neck.

8. Now comb against the grain of the beard to rough it all up and scan it for loose long hairs. Trim them to clean up the overall look. Do this on the sides, front, and underneath the beard.

IF there is a mustache…….Comb all those hairs down towards the lip and CAREFULLY cut along the top lip line. Then, on one side of the mustache, hold the hair out with your comb and shear over comb cut. Repeat on the other side.

Now you know how to scape your self or your dude! You will be amazed at how hot you feel/look with just a light scapin’

xo, HTHG

I posted this hairstyle on my Instagram the other day and you guys loved it, so I made it into a video. Once you understand and have practiced this hairdo, it literally takes 2 minutes to do. To get the feel of a rope braid, watch this basic video that breaks down the technique.

Just a little side note…..I amaze myself with how willing I am to appear before you in all my sloppy scrubby mom-ness in these videos. I often feel like I should polish up and make the lighting right, and be cute and coy and wear makeup for you and use shine spray. But it ain’t never gonna happen. This blog is not about me looking pretty, it is about you having fun with your hair. So sit your butt down and try this one. Practice it, master it, keep it in your bag of favorite hair tricks. Add a floral wreath to it, or just garnish it with flowers in general. This hairstyle is fit for a regal queen, a hippie wedding, or a twisted angel outcast.

This is one of those little routines that I have been doing for so long and it is so engrained, that I didn’t even think to share it until now. Sort of like the Ponytail facelift.

I had fun nerding out while I shot this tutorial. My goal was to tell a story with photos so I got creative with props and things.

This is the trick for wavy, unruly, loose curls and hair that needs a little taming. I use it on days when I want to smooth out my weird waves into a more polished finish.

I don’t use heat on my hair, ever. It is a personal choice that went along with my decision to stop fighting and start honoring my hair. So I have found other ways to style my hair. And this one is fool proof. What you will need is a tee-shirt and a boar bristle paddle brush. I love my Costco Calvin white T and my Mason Pearson brush. (The Denman brush is the more affordable version.)

The gist of this is that after showering, you wrap your hair up in your t-shirt like rasta mama and go about your business. The soft cotton absorbs the water without roughing your hair all up so that it is smoother when it dries. After an hour or so of doodling about with your rasta mama head wrap, take it down. Now get your brush ready, and give your hair a thorough and vigorous brushing to smooth it out even more. Let it air dry till it is almost completely dry, then add whatever smoothing product you like best (I like liquid gold smoother) and brush once more.

Smooth, healthy, and shiny!!!!

Your welcome, hair. XOXOXO

I wanted to show you a photo of how my hair is looking these days. There you go! That’s with no (professional) hair cut in 5 months. I have trimmed my bangs and the back twice now with your help. That’s so awesome for me! I absolutely love how the asymmetry keeps it looking soft and feminine. Who knew a badass hair cut like the “dragon tattoo cut” could grow out to be so perfectly girly? This is the first time I’ve grown it out in about three years. I always thought I couldn’t have long hair because it was too dry and unmanageable but now that I am ShamPHree-ing and not using heat tools or hair products I’m realizing my hair actually kinda rules ;] I was just holding it back (and frankly torturing it) before.

I’ve been debating finding a new stylist because the back of my hair is being awkward and I want to try funky bangs but I’m starting to think that I need to just trust my hair (the back especially) to grow out and be itself and be beautiful and maybe soon I’ll trust myself enough to try some crazy new DIY bangs. Thanks again for the help and confidence!

Erika, we think you look smashing!

This post is dedicated to my mom, Ann. She has taught me many things and I have taught her many things back. She used to braid my hair into 2 french braids and it was pure heaven. So thanks, mom, for everything. And happy mothers day to all the mamas out there! I hope you have planned something nice for yourself to celebrate mothers day this year.

About a year ago, I sat down to write a post about my favorite hair tricks for busy moms.
Mom hair is a subject that is very close to my heart because I am a mom who has mom hair.

I took Selah to the playground today. It was peak playground time in Seattle. First sunny week of spring, 10 AM on a Wednesday. The place was crawling with moms. I got to thinking about mom hair.

Like all the other urban modern moms, I promised myself that I would keep my look together after having kids. I abandoned that promise about 5 months into my first pregnancy, when yoga pants and hoodies won out over cute vintage maternity dresses and designer jeans. I promised myself that I wouldn’t drive a mini-van. I promised myself I wouldn’t have a pancake butt and mom hair.

As I watched the children play, ( AKA studied the mom hair in action) I realized that not only do I have a mini-van, ( Not that cute VW bus behind the mini-van) but I also have mom hair. And it is not so bad. It is just a messy ponytail/top-knot, natural textured fuss free simple easy hair.

If you were to see me in my element, you would see modern mom hair to the max. I have found an easy routine that works with my hair and my lifestyle. I have DIY layers and mom-bre ends and I ShamPHree my hair weekly. When I am shooting photos for this blog it is the only time that I don’t have mom hair. I love blogging because it is my only mom escape;)

Being a mom is the perfect excuse for abandoning your daily fight against your hair. Here is an great article about how to rock your mom hair.

I have a few tips for keeping your mom ‘do fresh.

Mom hair tips

1. Tired of looking and feeling tired? Try bangs! They are an instant style pick me up and they are easy to DIY!

2. Make sure your hair routine suits your lifestyle. Are you spending more time than you would like trying to get your hair to behave? Maybe it is time for a hair consciousness shift. Free the beast. Work with what you have, not against it. Maybe it is time to try ShamPHree-ing.

3. Make sure that your hair is cut in a way that will grow out well. In my opinion, cuts with rougher edges and layers and texture tend to grow out better.

4. If you color, stick with shades that flatter you. If you are stuck in a color rut and have been getting the same bleach highlights for the last 10 years, consider transitioning to a more low-maintenance color process.

5. Search high and low for a hairdresser that understands your taste and lifestyle. Ask around, search the internet, stop people on the street.

6. Have fun with your hair! This website alone has nearly a hundred easy DIY hairstyles for all hair types that can be done in 5 minutes or less with nothing but a couple of bobby pins and some small elastics. Even a small accent braid in your top-knot goes a long way. Experiment with DIY hairstyles. Try HTHG’s Tired Mama Braids!

What I saw at the playground today was a lot of moms who would rather be at the park with their kids than messing with their hair. I am grateful that mom hair has evolved from the days of that terrible mom-bob fashioned by Martha Stewart. Aren’t you?

Rock on with that mom hair.

Now I just need to work on loving my pancake ass.

Happy Friday! TGIF. This is a super easy and very pretty DIY hairstyle for medium-longish hair of any texture. I used ornamental combs to secure my braids, but you can also just use bobbys.

If you like the look of milkmaid braids but would rather the pretty part be in the back instead of on the top of your head, than this is the style for you. Here is how to do this lady-like braided hairstyle.

1. Part your hair down the center. Make a loose french braid on one side, all the way to the ends and secure with a clear elastic.

2. Repeat on the other side.

3. Criss-cross the braids.

4. Hold the end of one braid against your head, and overlap a bit of hair from the side over the tails to hide them.

5. Insert comb, teeth first, through the tail of the braid to secure it to the head and then repeat on the other side.

So easy, right? I love any excuse to use combs in my hair:)

XO, HTHG

Marlena’s hair is waist-length, thick, silky and blonde. Dream hair, basically. She wanted a ‘do for prom that went with a beautiful grecian inspired white dress and chandelier earrings. She wanted something a bit different, so she got an epic french fishtail with some accent pin curls that was so beautiful on her that we both almost cried.

Here is how I did this one.

1. I started by curling all of her hair with a large barrel iron. I sprayed the curls and let them cool for a couple minutes to set. Then, I worked through her crown back-combing tight-n-right to make a nice full base. She wanted plenty of volume. I smoothed the surface of the hair over the back combing.

2. I started a french fishtail braid in the back, slightly off to one side.

3. I added hair in small sections from the sides into the braid until I reached the nape of her neck.

4. I continued to fish-tail the free end of the braid over one shoulder and secured the end with a clear elastic.

5. Then I pulled the braid apart to loosen up. Here is a tip…..Start pulling apart from the end of the braid and work your way up. Start pulling big pieces to bulk it up, then pull smaller pieces out to rough up the edges.

To finish off this look, I isolated curls from around her face and pinned them onto the side as decoration. Then I sprayed the HELL out of it and gently (here is another trick;) Ran the curling iron over the top of the curls to heat up the spray and glue them to the head. Then, I let em cool, removed the pins, and set her free.

Also, you can wrap a small section of hair from the end of the braid around the elastic and tuck it in to finish off the braid.

XOXO! HTHG

Hi guys. I am trying to consolidate all my ShamPHree info into easy to understand posts so that if is more straightforward. So, I made a ShamPHree checklist for all of you who are ready to embark on your own journey.

Initially, your supplies will run you about 70$ and last a year or more. That is as much as a shampoo, conditioner, and styling products that will last you 3 months or less. After your first investment, all you will need to buy is more B.S. and ACV, essential oils and coconut oil.

Here is what you will need……

Bragg’s Apple Cider Vinegar- Buy a big jug of it at your local grocery store or click the link to buy it online. I like Bragg’s because it is alive with good bacterias that help to balance your scalp. Some people use white vinegar, and some people like lemon juice instead of vinegar all together. Experiment!

Arm & Hammer Baking Soda- I have never lived in any house that didn’t have a 5 year old box of Arm and Hammer B.S. hidden in a cupboard somewhere. Any brand of B.S. will do, some people like the aluminum free B.S. Get it at any grocery store, or click the link to get yours online.

Paddle brush (Denman)- For distributing your ShamPHree mixtures in the shower! Great for detangling coarse and curly hair. Get one at your local drug store or click the link to buy yours online.

Boar bristle brush- Great for helping distribute healthy scalp oils into dry ends. Also, great for general scalp health and hair growth stimulation! Get one at your local drug store or click the link to buy yours online.

Small medium mouth funnel- You will need one of these babies to help get the B.S, into your bottle! Click the ling to get yours.

Squirty bottles- Get 2 of them, and decorate them with pretty stickers. Also, get travel sizes! They really come in handy. Click the link to get yours, or go to your local art store and buy paint mixing bottles. You can also use your old shampoo and conditioner bottles.

Essential oils- Choose your favorite scent to add to your ACV for yummy smelling, fresh hair. Citrus scents blend beautifully, as well as mint, tea tree, lavender. Experiment with making your own blends! Click the link, or get yours at a local health food store.

Coconut oil-Your conditioning and smoothing secret weapon. I use mine in my hair, on my skin, I brush my teeth with it, and I cook with it. Get yours online or at your local health food store.

With these supplies, you are ready for your ShamPHree journey! Best of luck to you and your reclaimed hair.

Don’t forget to hashtag your #shamphree photos so we can see and inspire this hair revolution!

XOXO

Today, I want to stress this point. You need to brush your hair if you are using the ShamPHree method. In fact, no matter what method you use, you should brush your hair.

If your scalp seems very oily and your ends seem dry, or your scalp is flaky at all after experimenting with the ShamPHree routine, chances are you just need a good brushing. Using a brush does 3 important things to your hair…..

1. It stimulates the scalp. This is good for promoting healthy hair growth and cell turnover, which is very helpful if you have any sort of scalp condition or very slow growing hair. Also, brushing feels really good to the scalp!

2. It pulls the oil from the scalp down into the ends, where it can be absorbed by the dry tips of your hair that are thirsty for moisture. This creates consistency from scalp to tips.

3. It helps to clean the hair in general. A brush catches build up and debris from the hair and scalp and removes it, helping to keep it clean.

If you are going ShamPHree, make sure you have either a paddle brush ( better for coarse curls and brittle hair) or a boar bristle brush ( better for very oily hair and fine hair.)

I don’t know if I will go see it, but I sure do love making roaring 20′s inspired hairstyles.

Over the last year on HTHG, I have used many different eras as style inspiration for DIY hairstyles. Today on HTHG I am celebrating hair during the depression era, from the elite flapper girls to the dust bowl pioneers. For Art Nouveau inspired hairstyles, check out this post.

I know I’m a little late for Valentine’s day. If you are already so over heart braids, please kindly ignore this post. But If you like braids, and you like hearts, and you like conceptual love inspired hair, than bless your little braided heart. This one is for you.

Here is how to do it.

1. Start by parting the hair down the center of the head. Braid both sides into loose braids, and secure with clear elastics.

2. Take one braid and pull it up and across to the other side.

3. Pin it at the top, and then pull it down to form the curve of and pin the end into the center.

3. Take the other braid and pull it across in the other direction. Pin it at the top and pull it down to make the curve on the other side. Pin the end into place.

Does this make sense? This hairstyle is hard to put into words, but maybe it is because I didn’t sleep at all last night. As in none sleep. Laid in bed listening to the sounds of the night. Happens every couple months. I’m tired.

XOXO, HTHG

I don’t know about you but I have a smallish head. Sadly, it is something that I have been self conscious about my whole life. It has kept me from wearing my hair in tight hairstyles, and it has kept me from ever wearing high heels because I feel like a pinhead on a tree stump walking on stilts.

(FYI this photo shows more face than I have ever shared with the world. There I am. Little head, large forehead, big chin, tiny ears and all)

I imagine the snickers and the jeers of people passing me in the street, pointing and saying “Look at that big tall lady with a tiny head!!” This is my own stupid hang-up about my body, and I own it and try and not to give it too much power. When I was 21, I shaved my head. Then, I got pregnant with my first daughter the next week. The timing was less than perfect, because I blew up like a balloon with my tiny bald head. Yikers.

So you can imagine my excitement when I stumbled upon this great braiding trick that creates braids that don’t hug your head too tight. It is a technique that you can use with any sort of french braid. It works with french dutch braids, fishtails, and twists. Instead of adding hair from either side as you braid, only add hair to one side. The other side will just always overlap without adding any new hair.

For these braids, I added hair only from under the braid. It made the braids stick out a bit from my head which satiated my braid craving without making me feel too tiny-headed. Also, pulling the braids apart a bit to loosen them once the end is secured helps to bulk them up and give them more volume.

*Here is a tip-Start pulling apart from the end of the braids and work your way up;)

This hairstyle is easily made into this- Just by tucking and pinning the ends on either side.

Most of them are braids. If you are getting tired of HTHG braids, stay tuned because I am too and that means I am gearing up to move on to some uncharted hair-ritory (pardon the pun)

But for now, here is another DIY braid for you. This one needs no explaining, just a clear elastic, a comb, and a french braid at an angle. This hairstyle works on hair that is barely shoulder length to mid-back length.

I am in love with this haircut. This is what I will do when I decide to finally cut my hair. It is so modern and feminine and soft and edgy at the same time. I appreciate a haircut that doesn’t look too perfectly done. They tend to grow out beautifully.

The asymmetrical shlob works best on thicker hair with lots of wave and curl. It is an easy haircut to DIY!

This haircut that I did on Kim started out with a simple side ponytail, I pulled the holder down to the ends, and cut straight across the ends, removing about an inch and a half of length. This created the shape of the haircut. Then I went through and texturized the ends a bit, and layered her a bit more. This can be done by gathering the hair into an even higher side ponytail near top of the head and cutting off the ends.

Here is Kimmy before and after. What a fox!!!!!

I lazily braided and pinned my hair into this SUPER easy style a couple weeks ago, and finished it off with a flower (was it a daisy? cant remember. Seems to early in the year for daisies.)

I went about my business, and then rejoiced at the end of the day when I glanced in the mirror and the ‘do still looked great, despite the inevitable wilting that happens to hairstyles after a day of chasing children around.

Here is how to do it…

1. Start with a center part and 2 regular braids down the back, secured with clear elastics.

2. Pull the braids apart to fluff them up a bit, starting at the ends and working my way up.

3. The braids should be irregular, loose and pretty messy for this casual style.

4. Take one of the braids and cross it over and pin it just under the other one with criss-cross bobby pins. If your hair is longer, roll the tail up a bit and pin it discreetly so that the overlapping braid will cover it.

5. Take the other braid and cross it over to the base of the first braid. Make sure it covers your criss-cross pins. Now, pin the ends under the base of the braid and hide the tail. Add additional pins as needed!

Now tuck a flower behind your ear and wear it until it gets all wilty.

Perfect lazy Sunday hairstyle.

XOXO!

I’ve shown you the Infinity Braid. And the Infinity Twist. Now it’s time for the Infinity snake-twist!

The first thing you need to know how to do is the unicorn horn of braids (snake twist)

Ready? Here is the tutorial.

1. Begin by making 3 vertical sections. One on each side, and one in the back. There should be roughly the same amount of hair in each section.

2. Snake twist each section, and secure the ends with clear elastics.

3. Now wrap the middle twist into a bun. Not too tight, you want to be able to see all the twists. Pin the bun into place, making sure to tuck in and hide the end.

4. Now take one of your side twists and wrap it over the top of the bun and around, pinning it into place. Make sure you pin it anywhere it feels un-secure. Take the other twist, and wrap it underneath the bun and around the other way. Pin it into place, and make sure the tails are tucked in and hidden.

As with most DIY hairstyles, a pretty comb, clip, or brooch is gorgeous to finish the look. Pretty!

As you know by now, I was once a hair product junkie and now I am not. Now I do the ShamPHree method, which uses and honors your hair and scalp’s natural production of moisturizing protective oils to coat the hair. I love to use coconut oil and shea butter to moisturize my ends but that is about it.

I love my hair without loading it down the way I used to…..But I have been craving a little extra something lately. I go 4-5 days in between ShamPHree-ing (No-poo-ing) and usually by day 3 I am wanting something to lift my hair back up, freshen it, add a bit of texture, and make it smell pretty without building it up with plastic-y waxy residue. I have been on the hunt for the Perfect Hair Powder.

I was geeking out the other day on Instagram and a friend of mine posted a photo of her new bottle of hair powder from Naked Eye Beauty. I was instantly intrigued.

(Photos NEB models)

I went to their website and read about the company. They are Vegan and natural L.A. based hair and skin care product line that custom blends hair care products, soaps and scrubs, makeup, and general facial care items that I want to stock my bathroom cabinet with.

I was immediately intrigued by the ingredients that they use in their products, their cool earthy product names and packaging, and the beautifully blended colors they create for their makeup. I eagerly read about their upcoming collaboration with Sisters of the Black Moon, one of my favorite online shop/blogs. It is called The Ether collection - and it is an Essential Oil Blend, Hair Powder and Body Butter……All scented with a delicious and sexy sounding mix of bitter orange, lavander, llang llang, and amber. I need it.

I excitedly bought the blush and eyeliner, deodorant, and of course the Natural Hair Powder ( I got Blonde for my almost blondish hair.)

It arrived 2 days later on my doorstep and I tore open the package because I just happened to be on day 3 between ShamPHree’s and I was desperate for something to revive my tired hair.

I immediately loved the fresh sage-y lavender smell of the Natural Hair Powder. I sprinkled it into my roots, brushed it through, and was in love at first dusting. It disappeared into my hair, soaking up oil, giving me lift at my roots, and adding just enough texture and grit. It even made my hair shiny, which was a very nice surprise!

I ended up stretching out my next ShamPHree to 6 days total, longest ever. Thanks to this fantastic product my hair looked, felt, and smelled great from days 3-6. I couldn’t be happier. I had to share this with you because I love this stuff so much and I even put together a little video to show you how I used my Naked Eye Beauty Natural Hair Powder.

I’m really excited to share with you this fun project that I just sort of stumbled upon while staring at a tiny bag of crystals that a friend of mine in Arkansas found for me in the Mt. Ida crystal mine. The crystals were perfect and sparkly and tiny and I wanted them in my hair. And what is the best way to put random objects in our hair?? Glue them to bobby pins! You can attach almost anything to a bobby pin and stick it in your hair.

I brought my crystal pins along for my Nikki J promo shoot, in case we needed them to complete our Deco-Star Wars Witchy theme.

What do you think? Pretty cool, right?

For this little project you will need clear drying glue ( I love Eco glue) a scrap of leather, 2 bobby pins, some scissors, and some very small rough crystals.

Wear your Crystal Pins in any boho-inspired hairstyle for added earthy gorgeous bling.

Here is how to do it. Happy crafting! XOXO.

My daughters both have spring birthdays. I have spent the last 2 months hearing about, talking about, planning, worrying about, preparing for and celebrating little girl birthdays. When it comes down to it, I just want to see them blow out that candle and the flickering fire of joy in their eyes. That is a special moment.

In honor of my daughter Marley’s 6th birthday, here is the HBD braid. The braid to help the little gals feel like queens for a day. Next year, I will make one for my little Selah too, but she doesn’t have enough hair yet.

This hairstyle is great for shorter-medium length hair. If the hair is very fine and slippery, prep it with texture spray. Here is my favorite DIY sea spray for adding grip to the hair.

Here is how to get this look…..

1.Part the hair across the back of the head, from the top of one ear across to the top of the other. Start a french braid on the left side of the bottom section. Braid all the way across the back, and secure the free end with a clear elastic.

2. Make a side part on the left side of the head. Start a french braid on the heavy side, and braid it around the head. Braid in all the hair from the top section. Your braid should end on the light side of the part ( left side, in this case) Secure the end of the braid with elastic.

3. Now take the tail of your round-the-head braid, and tuck it under the beginning of the braid, so that it looks continuous.

4 Bobby pin the tail in discreetly.

5. Take the tail of the back-of-the-head braid and push it back behind the braid and pin it to secure it.

Now, add a headband, feather fascinator, vintage brooch, comb, clip, something pretty and sparkly! HBD, baby.

XOXO, HTHG
